BOOT HOISTS & STOWAGE

Boot hoists and stowage systems for wheelchairs, scooters and powerchairs

Taking your mobility equipment with you should not depend on whether you can lift it into the car by hand.

Boot hoists and stowage systems can help lift, position or store wheelchairs, mobility scooters and powerchairs, reducing the physical effort involved in loading and unloading.

The right system depends on both the equipment you use and the vehicle you drive.

LESS MANUAL LIFTING

Make loading your mobility equipment easier

Loading a wheelchair, mobility scooter or powerchair into a vehicle can be physically demanding, particularly when the equipment is heavy or difficult to handle.

A boot hoist can lift and position the equipment into the boot or storage area, reducing the need for manual lifting.

Other stowage systems provide different ways to transport mobility equipment where a conventional boot hoist is not the most suitable option.

Different solutions are available for different mobility devices, vehicle sizes and boot configurations.

A professional assessment is important to make sure the system is compatible with both your vehicle and mobility equipment.

Brig-Ayd 40kg Mk2

A compact boot hoist designed for lighter mobility equipment.

Its fold-flat design can make it suitable for smaller vehicles, while its lifting arm provides additional height for some combinations of taller mobility devices and smaller cars.

Key features

  • Powered loading assistance
  • Compact design
  • Increased lifting height from its specialist arm design

BraunAbility Wheelchair Roof Box

A dedicated storage system for carrying a folding manual wheelchair on the roof of the vehicle.

Bruno Joey Platform Lift

The Bruno Joey provides a different approach for transporting larger mobility scooters and powerchairs.

The mobility device is driven onto a platform, which then lifts it into position for travel.

This can provide an alternative where equipment is too large or tall for a conventional boot-hoist arrangement.

Key features

  • Powered platform lifting
  • Drive-on loading
  • Designed particularly for larger vehicles such as MPVs and van-derived vehicles

FIND THE RIGHT SYSTEM

What needs to work together?

Your mobility equipment

The weight, dimensions and shape of your wheelchair, scooter or powerchair will affect which lifting systems are suitable.

Some hoists are designed for lighter equipment, while others can accommodate much heavier mobility devices.

Your vehicle

Boot dimensions, available headroom and the shape of the opening all influence which systems can be installed.

A solution that works well in one vehicle may not work in another.

How you use the car

The right setup also depends on how often you load the equipment, whether you are travelling independently and how much boot or passenger space you want to retain.

That is why we assess the complete setup before recommending a system.

CHOOSING A HOIST

Lifting capacity is only part of the decision

It can be tempting to choose a boot hoist based on lifting capacity alone.

In practice, the equipment still has to pass through the vehicle opening and fit safely within the available storage space.

We therefore consider:

The mobility device

Its weight, overall dimensions and lifting points.

The vehicle

Boot opening, internal height and available storage space.

The user

How the equipment will be attached, operated and unloaded.

The journey

Whether additional luggage, passengers or other equipment also need to be accommodated.

The result needs to work as a complete everyday system, not simply lift the required weight.

Not sure whether your scooter or wheelchair will fit?

We can assess your mobility equipment and vehicle together before recommending a hoist or stowage system.

FROM ASSESSMENT TO FITTING

How it works

01

Tell us what you need to transport

Let us know which wheelchair, mobility scooter or powerchair you use and which vehicle you drive.

If you are considering changing either, tell us that too.

02

We assess compatibility

We look at the dimensions and weight of your mobility equipment alongside the available space and access within the vehicle.

This helps identify which systems could be suitable.

03

We recommend the right solution

We can then explain the available options and provide a quote for the recommended equipment and installation.

04

Professional fitting

Your chosen system is fitted to the vehicle and set up around the equipment it will carry.

We will explain how to operate the system safely before you begin using it.

MORE THAN BOOT HOISTS

What if a conventional boot hoist is not suitable?

A boot hoist is not the only way to transport mobility equipment.

Depending on your wheelchair or scooter and the vehicle you use, a roof-mounted wheelchair storage system or drive-on platform lift may provide a better solution.

If you are also considering changing your vehicle, Adapt & Drive allows the vehicle and the adaptations to be considered together from the beginning.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered

You do not need to choose one before the assessment.

The right system depends on the weight and dimensions of your mobility equipment, the available space within your vehicle and how the equipment needs to be loaded.

Yes, depending on the scooter and hoist.

Different systems are designed for different lifting capacities, so we need to check both the weight of the scooter and whether it can physically fit into the vehicle.

Many can.

Heavier powerchairs may require one of the higher-capacity hoists, and vehicle space becomes particularly important with larger equipment.

The products within this range cover different capacities.

For example, our range includes systems for equipment weighing up to approximately 40kg, 80kg, 100kg and 200kg.

The highest capacity is not automatically the best option. Compatibility with the vehicle and mobility equipment still needs to be assessed.

Possibly.

Compatibility depends on the vehicle, the mobility equipment and the specific hoist. We can assess your existing car before recommending a system.

Not necessarily.

The amount of remaining space depends on the mobility equipment, hoist and vehicle. Some systems are more compact than others, and alternative storage solutions may be considered where preserving boot space is particularly important.

Alternative systems may be available.

For example, a folding manual wheelchair may be suitable for roof storage, while larger scooters or powerchairs may work with a platform-lift system or a different vehicle.

Potentially, yes.

As with petrol and diesel vehicles, the individual vehicle and installation need to be assessed before compatibility is confirmed.
