Our Top Spots: Hidden Gems (and a Few Favourites!) for a Sunny Day Out
Hello everyone! As the days get longer and the weather turns milder, we at Bush Healthcare know how much joy getting outdoors can bring. Whether you relish a gentle stroll with a supportive walker or rollator, or you embrace the freedom of exploring further afield on your mobility scooter or wheelchair, South Wales is brimming with beautiful places just waiting to be discovered. We’ve compiled a list of some of our cherished spots, keeping in mind accessibility and the sheer delight of experiencing these locations.
1. Goldcliff Lagoons

Nature lovers will find serenity at Goldcliff Lagoons, a part of the Newport Wetlands National Nature Reserve. This network of freshwater habitats and strategically placed hides provides exceptional opportunities to observe a diverse range of birdlife throughout the seasons. The paths around the lagoons are generally flat and well-maintained, making them ideal for gentle strolls with a walker or for navigating with a mobility scooter or wheelchair. The hides themselves often have accessible entry points, ensuring everyone can enjoy the fascinating birdwatching experience.
Getting there: Park just east of Goldcliff village and take the clearly marked, mostly level path towards the coast, crossing the gate marked “Newport Wetlands National Nature Reserve.” This area is conveniently located near our Bush Healthcare store in Newport, so feel free to pop in for any mobility needs before or after your visit.
2. Traeth Llyfn Beach

For those seeking a more secluded escape, Traeth Llyfn Beach offers a sense of tranquility that’s hard to beat. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs, reaching this sandy haven involves a walk along the Coast Path. While direct access with mobility scooters or wheelchairs might be challenging due to the natural terrain and steps, the views of the coastline from accessible points along the Coast Path leading towards it can still be incredibly rewarding. Consider using a lightweight folding chair if you have a walking companion who can assist.
3. Abereiddy Blue Lagoon, St. Davids

Imagine the vibrant turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon contrasting with the rugged slate cliffs – a truly breathtaking sight on a sunny day. This former quarry, now open to the sea, offers stunning photo opportunities. While the path down to the lagoon can be a little uneven in places, those using sturdy mobility aids might find the views from the top well worth the visit. Remember to check the terrain beforehand to ensure your scooter or wheelchair is suitable for the initial access.
Getting there: The closest parking is at Abereiddy Beach (SA62 6DT), costing £4 for the day.
4. Marloes Sands

With its vast expanse of golden sand backed by imposing cliffs, Marloes Sands is a truly impressive beach. It offers stunning vistas of Skokholm and Gateholm Islands and invites leisurely walks along the shoreline. While accessing the beach itself might involve navigating some sandy paths, the clifftop paths offer accessible viewpoints where you can appreciate the scenery and perhaps decide on a comfortable spot to rest and enjoy the fresh sea air. A sturdy rollator with larger wheels could be particularly useful for navigating the flatter sections of the coastal paths.
Getting there: There’s a National Trust car park near Marloes village (charges apply for non-members). A track leads from the main road to the beach.
5. Cardiff Bay

Although it may be the bustling capital, Cardiff Bay has a surprisingly relaxing charm. The level promenade around the freshwater lake is perfect for a leisurely stroll with a walker or for enjoying the freedom of your mobility scooter. You can soak in the vibrant atmosphere, watch the boats, and perhaps stop for a coffee or a meal at one of the many accessible cafes and restaurants. The area is well-paved and offers smooth navigation for all types of mobility aids.
Getting there: Follow signs for Cardiff Bay. From the M4, exit at Junction 33 (A4232). The Baycar bus (Service 6) runs frequently from the city center and is generally accessible.
6. Nash Point

The dramatic cliffs and iconic lighthouse at Nash Point provide a stunning backdrop for a day out. The coastal paths here offer breathtaking views of the Bristol Channel. While some paths may be uneven, there are accessible viewing points closer to the car park where you can safely enjoy the scenery and perhaps spot some fossils. A comfortable mobility scooter can make exploring the more level areas around the lighthouse a breeze.
7. The Gower

While not a hidden gem, the Gower Peninsula’s diverse landscapes are simply too beautiful to omit! From the iconic Worm’s Head (accessible on foot at low tide) to the sandy stretches of Langland and Caswell Bay, and the panoramic views from the lighthouse, there’s something for everyone. Many of the coastal paths offer accessible sections perfect for a gentle walk with a supportive aid, and the paved promenades at Langland and Caswell Bay are ideal for mobility scooters and wheelchairs. You’ll find our Bush Healthcare store in Swansea conveniently located to help you find the right equipment for your Gower adventures.
8. Skomer Island

A visit to Skomer Island is a truly unique experience, especially during puffin season. While the island itself has some uneven paths and slopes, the opportunity to witness the incredible wildlife is well worth the effort. It’s advisable to check the accessibility of the island’s paths with the Wildlife Trust beforehand if you have specific mobility requirements. Having a lightweight folding wheelchair and an able-bodied companion might be beneficial for navigating some of the terrain once you’re on the island.
Travel Details: The Dale Princess ferry runs from Martin’s Haven to Skomer between April and October (Tuesday to Sunday, weather permitting). Tickets are first-come, first-served, so arrive early.
